Howard Junior celebrate Roald Dahl Day

The rest of the world may have celebrated Roald Dahl Day on the centenary of his birth on September 13, but they do things slightly differently at one west Norfolk school.

Howard Junior in King’s Lynn has its own way of marking events and it held its own day celebrating the author yesterday.

And while some celebrations two weeks ago may not have been that great, Howard’s special event days are always spectacular.

Headteacher Gregory Hill said: “We wanted to do something extra spectacular, and September 13 was too near to the start of term, to do what we wanted. All 205 children were dressed up as Roald Dahl characters. Everyone in the community worked really hard to make really nice outfits.

“In the morning the children watched David Walliams talking about the BFG on the big screen, from a reading he made celebrating Roald Dahl’s centenary. The children and staff have been immersed in Roald Dahl the whole day.

“We have decorated the school, one of the teachers was dressed as Willy Wonka, and there were
many Oompa-Loompas. Miss Trunchbull from Matilda has been patrolling the corridors keeping everyone in line. It’s been a very special day and we’ve had praise from the official Roald Dahl Day bosses on Twitter.

“Roald Dahl’s books are very popular here.

“We’ve got good standards in reading and writing and all the children have iPads.”
